This cup is inspired by my late grandfather, William DiSalvatore. As a Navy veteran, he loved the sea. His basement was modeled after a ship: instead of doorknobs there were ores, instead of windows, there were port holes, and the colors were blue and red. I wanted to capture this one of a kind basement into a cup by using portholes, an ore, and red and blue.

The mask I have created is both a metaphorical and literal reflection of women’s oppression in society. The face of a women superhero is covered with quotes expressing the equality of women’s capability and strength to men’s and the speech bubble defines the word feminism. All though the quotes seemingly only pertain to the realm of superheroes, they can be applied to women in every realm. Whether it is regarding sports, jobs, talent, etc. women are just as capable as men. I chose superheroes because many of those stories and comics often lack representations of female superheroes who are not sexualized, as well as an absence of female superheroes regarded as equal to male superheroes. Women are often seen as weaker, or inferior to men and unfortunately this is a mask we have been burdened with. Our true strength, intelligence, and talent is hidden behind a mask of sexism that hinders people from seeing the truth. The mask I have created uses inspirational quotes to reveal what people should think of when they look a woman. They should see our capability is equivalent to that of men’s. Society often belittles women and treats them differently. It is the twenty first century and women do not even have equal pay. Society struggles every day with accepting feminism. The list could go on and on when naming ways society treats women unequally. It is unfortunate that we have to deal with the same problem our great great grandmothers dealt with. I want to see the day where a woman becomes president. I want to see the Congress pass equal pay for women. I want to see the next generation grow up and not worry that they are being hired for their looks, or being subordinated because of their gender. Feminism is a basic concept that is not advocated enough for, even today. Instead of feeling inferior and weak as our “mask” wants us to feel, I want girls to look at my mask and feel empowered because everything a man can do, a woman can do too

I am a high school honors student with a passion for the arts, especially clay, photography, and dance. All the pieces featured on this page are from my sophomore year of high school. I have been a dancer for thirteen years and a competition dancer for two years. My love for photography has been apparent since I was a child, specifically nature. In my free time, I often hike creating the perfect opportunities to photograph nature. My love for nature and dance can be seen both directly and indirectly throughout my pieces.
